Fall applications of Phosphorus (P) and especially Potassium (K), (the third number on the bag) has been shown to be very beneficial. The fertilizer should be low in nitrogen, just enough N in order for the plant to take up the Phosphorus and Potassium (Liebig’s Law of Minimum). Nitrogen is the first number on the bag. Benefits of Phosphorus and Potassium include enhanced disease suppression, cold hardiness, as well as, performing other functions within the plant. With the extra P and K applied in the fall, your lawn will stay greener going into the fall and be the first lawn to green up in early spring. Even though this is a lawn winterizer fertilizer, this blend can also be used on gardens, trees, shrubs and flowerbeds.
